Seminar 65 Compassion in Action: Buddhist Practice in Prison
This talk shares the presenter’s experience of sharing the Dharma in men’s prisons in Texas. Equally important or perhaps more important is “being the Dharma” with incarcerated men, also known as inmates, or convicts. The US is not a Buddhist country and certainly the State of Texas is not a Buddhist state, so is there an interest in Buddhism in prisons in Texas and the US? How does suffering (discomfort) appear in prison settings? Is “compassion” a relevant concept in prison life? Is the concept of “impermanence” applicable in prisons? How do volunteers cope with initial feelings of discomfort and fear? For those who aren’t likely to ever volunteer in a prison, how do these concepts apply to other settings in life?
