Seminar 67 Metta Meditation: Cultivating Compassion for Self and Others
The Science of the Heart In the Abhidharma & Life series, we don’t just practice; we investigate. This session focuses on Metta (Loving-Kindness), a Buddhist practice rooted in the Four Immeasurable Minds: Loving-kindness, Compassion, Joy, and Equanimity. While Metta is often felt as a warmth in the heart, the Abhidharma teaches us that it is a precise mental factor capable of transforming our entire psychological landscape. By systematically cultivating these qualities, we can dissolve the mental boundaries between ourselves and others, replacing aversion with a "boundless heart." The Wisdom of the Suttas "Just as a mother would protect her only child at the risk of her own life, even so, let him cultivate a boundless heart towards all beings." We will explore how a practitioner abides with a heart imbued with loving-kindness in every direction. Just as one feels natural friendliness upon seeing a beloved friend, we will learn the mental discipline required to extend that same friendliness to all creatures, without exception. Event Highlights •Systematic Practice: A guided Metta meditation designed to transform the mind's attitude and eradicate the seeds of anger. •Abhidharma Insights: A brief exploration of how these "Immeasurables" function within Buddhist psychology to create a calmer, kinder life. •Reflective Sharing: An opportunity to share experiences and insights with fellow practitioners in a supportive environment. •Interactive Q&A: A dedicated session to dive deeper into the teachings, clarify the practice, and honor the Buddha within us all. Join the Conversation This event is open to anyone seeking a deeper connection to themselves and the world.
