Giant Clams and Plundered Worlds: Learning with Hima at Sagan Kotturan CHamoru, Guam

Picture
What can giant clams teach us about Indigenous sovereignty, cultural survival, and environmental justice?
As the United States moves to protect giant clams (“hima”) in Guåhan (Guam) under federal endangered species legislation, complex questions emerge about conservation, culture, and power. Through a remarkable collection of fossilized hima and CHamoru ways of knowing, Nathan invites us to uncover stories of colonialism, environmental change, resilience, and belonging. Together, we will explore how learning with these ancient companions can deepen our understanding of the past and inspire more just, sustainable, and decolonial futures.
