Buddha Dharma

Impermanence Is Like a Meal - Be It Salty or Light, It Is Fine.

When living in the physical world, we often have a lot of worries - worrying about price inflation, worrying about our health, worrying about our children's future, etc. All sorts of worries make us anxious.

This worry about the future often comes from the fact that we are afraid of facing the imperfections of the present, and thus we desire to change the current status by external means. However, we cannot control whether our surroundings and the present status are going to change, just like we can only predict the weather but cannot fully control it.

The Buddha taught us, "All that lasts must end, all that is high must fall, all that is united must separate, and all that lives must die." Rather than worrying about the future, think about what you can best do at the present.

Master Hong Yi once visited a temple. The temple's servant made the first meal very salty, and the second very light. He asked the master about the taste. The master replied: Both the salty and the light meals have their own flavor.

The servant wholeheartedly admired the master's mastery of the training, which is to the extent that he could equally accept both the salty and the light with equanimity, keeping his calm and maintaining his inner peace and joy.
