To Rejoice

Rejoice is a word we hear often among Buddhists. To rejoice is an important way to live happily.

Some people feel uncomfortable on different scales when seeing another’s lives and careers flourish. They often may make sarcastic remarks, or even speak badly behind their backs. that is human nature, but it is not the right approach to life or the right attitude.

Buddha told us that we should sincerely be happy for others when they are doing well. You rejoice; I also rejoice. This is called a joyful mind.

For example, in the temple, some disciples are better educated than others, some work more productive than others, and some are more talented in understanding dharma, and so on. Because of these gaps, some disciples often feel a sense of loss.

If we don’t rejoice at others, this sense of loss would drive us to prove our ability. But what if we still couldn’t beat others? We could only indulge in more sufferings and even resort to crooked ways to prove ourselves.

Despite the precepts, many people still have a strong attachment to the concept of ownership -- such as being attached by their own possessions. That’s why Buddha’s teachings urge us to persistently seek the truth of the universe and life. There is nothing in the world that belongs to you; gains and losses are merely a product of people’s thought, an idea, all of which we must let go eventually.
