Someone asked, “why would Buddhists chant A Mi Tuo Fo (Amitabha) when expressing gratitude, mediating conflicts, or accomplishing a mission?” In the temple, A Mi Tuo Fo are very good Kind Words. For example, you may feel uneasy or nervous when you visit a temple for the first time. At this moment, it would be nice to chant A Mi Tuo Fo. This mantra carries immense power, which brings greetings and blessings from Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. In the Buddhist scriptures, most of the existing Mantras contain the names of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, or other divines. Chanting a Mantra is to repeatedly take refuge in the three treasures: Buddha, Dharma and Sangha, and connect with their spiritual power via their vows. More importantly, the process of chanting mantras contains the power of observing precepts and meditation. It could inspire compassion and wisdom of the practitioners, thereby cutting their attachments and reducing their afflictions. This is how we should practice Buddhism: continually cultivating Precepts, Samadhi, and Wisdom, (Cultivating the minds and the power of concentration) . When you are fully endowed with wisdom and compassion, they will be reflected in your daily life. Chanting mantras, sutras or the names of Buddhas is to make you stay focused on Buddhist practice and persevere at all times.
